The University of Tasmania has officially launched its redesigned Advanced Nursing postgraduate program, a bold step forward in preparing nurses for leadership, expanded clinical roles, and interdisciplinary collaboration across Australia’s healthcare system.
With more than 20 specialisations, including the newly added Palliative Care, the program offers unmatched flexibility and depth. Each specialisation is taught by expert clinicians, ensuring students receive practice-informed, career-aligned education that reflects the realities of modern healthcare.
“Our new Advanced Nursing postgraduate program is the result of extensive consultation with industry, educators, and professional bodies across Australia, and it responds directly to emerging challenges in healthcare,” said Associate Professor Farida Saghafi, Associate Head, Learning and Teaching, Postgraduate.
“They aren’t just academic credentials. They are career-aligned, practice-informed qualifications designed to equip nurses for expanding scope of practice roles, clinical leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration.”
Delivered fully online and part-time, the program is designed for working professionals who want to advance their careers without stepping away from them. Students can tailor their study journey, with pathways suited to both early-career nurses and experienced clinicians.
“We designed this program not just for today’s nurses, but for tomorrow’s leaders,” Associate Professor Saghafi said. “It’s about preparing clinicians to thrive in dynamic, team-based environments where advanced skills and critical thinking are essential.
“Flexibility was non-negotiable. Nurses are balancing demanding careers and personal lives, so we built a program that adapts to them, not the other way around.
“Every specialisation is taught by clinicians who are deeply embedded in their field. That means students aren’t just learning theory, they’re gaining insights from professionals who live it every day.”
Historically, the University of Tasmania’s Postgraduate Nursing program has reported student satisfaction well above the national average, reflecting its commitment to quality and student support. We are committed to maintaining this level of satisfaction with our overhauled postgraduate program. Nurses can engage in interprofessional learning opportunities, building networks and skills that mirror the collaborative nature of contemporary healthcare.
“We have worked closely with industry partners to ensure our graduates are not only employable, but they are highly valued,” Associate Professor Saghafi said. “Whether you are passionate about acute care, mental health, or palliative care, or any of our other specialisations, we have created pathways that allow you to advance without compromising on quality or support.”
To support access and equity, the University is offering generous scholarships to employees of its valued industry partners, helping nurses across Australia take the next step in their careers.
