Transitioning to the Australian nursing workforce: Perceptions and experiences of international nursing students and new graduates

Researchers from the University of South Australia want to hear from international nursing students about the experiences of their final-year transition from undergraduate study at Australian universities to the Australian nursing workforce.

The primary objective of this research is to gain a clear and detailed understanding from international nursing students about the transition from the final-year undergraduate year of study at Australian universities to the Australian nursing workforce to better support positive and successful transitions from student to new graduate nurse.

This research creates an opportunity to express views and opinions about their preparation and experiences of transition from the university to the nursing workforce. Detailed understanding of participants’ preparedness, and the barriers and facilitators to successful transition will help to better support positive transition from university to the Australian nursing workforce. Identifying factors that impact transition experiences can help to improve workplace experiences, job satisfaction, and the likelihood of retention of new graduates in the nursing profession.

This research will help nursing clinical leaders to identify areas of improvement related to orientation and induction programs in the healthcare, managerial support, mentorship initiatives, clinical leadership, aged care, community care and disability sectors. Knowing international nursing students’ and new graduates’ experiences, concerns and challenges will help to improve the existing support services and programs related to workforce transition. This research will provide opportunities to review relevant policies related to transition programs.

The synthesis of quantitative and qualitative data collected in this research will help in developing recommendations for policy, workforce reform, clinical practice and research to enable a supportive and successful transition from the university to the nursing workforce.

Taking part in this research is voluntary and involves an online survey that will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

You will need to be a final-year international nursing student studying in an Australian university/college on a temporary student visa, completing an undergraduate nursing program in 2020.
