Starting out as a graduate nurse or midwife can be exciting, overwhelming and everything in between. Drawing on insights shared in the ANMJ’s Grad Spotlight series, recent graduates reflect on what helped them find their feet – and the advice they’d pass on to those just starting out.
Ask, learn and lean in
“My advice is to ask lots of questions. Asking questions and being curious is an essential part of being a great grad nurse. By asking questions, we are able to gain new knowledge and ensure that we are providing the highest quality patient-centred care possible.
“Additionally, it is important to take all the opportunities that come your way. As a grad it is important to be brave and challenge ourselves.
“Have fun, smile and enjoy your work! Be curious and open to learning. Each shift is different. Make an effort to make friends with your fellow nursing colleagues. Ask for an offer to help those around you. Embrace all the ups and downs that nursing has to offer.”

Alex White, Grad RN at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
Trust your knowledge
“My advice would be to not doubt your abilities and have confidence in your knowledge. Embrace opportunities as they become your experiences and never be afraid to ask questions. Questioning creates learning, which in turn is knowledge and makes you a better nurse.”
Laura Schmidt, grad RN at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide
You’re not expected to know everything
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. You’re not expected to know everything straight away. Be kind to yourself, trust your co-workers, and celebrate the small wins!”

Jorja Hudson, grad RN at Northern Sydney LHD
