Nurses and midwives have until 31 May 2025 to renew their annual registration.
Before you renew, you must set up your new Ahpra portal, introduced earlier this year, which includes multifactor authentication to protect your personal data and a range of features such as streamlined forms and a personalised dashboard.
Click here for a step-by-step guide and video tutorial on how to set up your Ahpra portal.
You can check your current registration details and expiry date on the national register here.
What information is required?
You must declare that you meet the NMBA’s registration standards including:
- Professional indemnity insurance
- Recency of practice (Nurses and midwives must complete a minimum of 450 hours of practice in the preceding five years)
- Continual professional development (CPD)
- Criminal history
- A health impairment relevant to practice
How much does registration renewal cost?
The national general registration renewal fee for 2025-26 costs $185. If you do not renew by 31 May you will incur a late payment fee, and if you don’t renew by 1 July, your registration will lapse and name be removed from the national register. Find out more about registration renewal here
Important update: Issues accessing and navigating the portal
Many nurses and midwives have reported challenges in accessing and navigating Ahpra’s new system. This has included logins not working, difficulty using multifactor authentication, and being unable to get in touch with Ahpra’s customer service team.
In a statement to the ANMJ, Ahpra acknowledged that some practitioners may require additional support in setting up their new portal and noted its customer service team was experiencing very high call volumes.
To provide extra support, it has since expanded its hotline hours to 8am to 8pm AEST.
Importantly, Ahpra confirmed that no nurse or midwife will lose their registration due to not being able to access the system. In an additional statement, it has since announced it will also be waiving the renewal late fee until 15 June due to the ongoing issues.
Ahpra is also hosting explainer webinars for employers and managers this week and next covering the new system.
If you need further support, contact your ANMF state or territory branch.
