Grad Spotlight – Alex

My passion for helping people in their time of need inspired me to start nursing. It is incredibly rewarding to work in a nursing team where we all strive together to achieve the collective goal of providing high-quality, patient-centred care.

I also take great joy in education and learning. I know that pursuing a career in nursing means that I can expand my clinical knowledge via hospital-based study days, education programs and postgraduate studies at university.  My aim is to pursue higher education and complete my Master of Nursing.

Nursing for me is not just a vocation, but rather a lifelong career journey.

My first year as a grad nurse has been amazing and has far exceeded my expectations! I have been warmly welcomed into a supportive and encouraging environment at St Vincent’s Public Hospital Melbourne.

Feeling so safe, supported and nurtured in my graduate year has allowed me to improve upon my clinical knowledge and thrive as a grad nurse (and person).  The support and education that I have received from my educators, managers and colleagues has been outstanding.

As a graduate nurse, I have found nursing to be an extremely rewarding experience. I am privileged to be able to do something that I love every day.

My most memorable experience working as a new grad was when I cared for a patient who had been hospitalised with a newly diagnosed metastatic stage 4 colorectal cancer.

I was by the patient’s side as they took hours to call each one of their friends and family to tell them of their unexpected diagnosis. The patient’s resilience and positive attitude in the face of adversity demonstrated an admirable sense of character.

I provided education about how to operate their NG tube at home. The patient was determined to be as independent as possible for as long as possible.

As a grad, this patient showed me true strength of character and resilience. This inspired me to adopt those traits into my nursing practice. It was a privilege to care for this patient.

The biggest challenge that I have faced has been my confidence. At the start of my grad year and the start of my second rotation, I have found myself being challenged by a lack of confidence and feelings of self-doubt.

I have been fortunate to be surrounded with an amazing education team, and colleagues who help and support me. I have been learning to ask lots of questions.

As a grad this year, I have worked hard to be kind to myself. Remembering that this is the beginning of my nursing journey and that everyone has to start somewhere. As a grad it is important to remember that everyone wants you to succeed.

Staying energised is my goal during a busy shift. My snacks include anything that is high in protein and easy to prepare the night before!

Lately, I have been having protein Greek yogurt with fruit and granola, and protein shakes. I strive to fuel myself with nutrient-dense whole foods.

While I do eat clean and healthy foods, I do love chocolate!

Exercising and spending time with friends and family has been essential for me in my graduate year as it ensures that I am looking after my mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

I have recently been loving hot mat and reformer pilates. I always make sure that I have classes booked to unwind after a busy AM shift. Before PM shifts, I lift weights at the gym. Through the release of natural endorphins, exercise allows me to better regulate my thoughts and feelings. It also provides my brain the opportunity to focus on tasks outside of work.

Having friends that are also grads who can easily relate and understand to your experience as a graduate nurse, is a great help.

My advice is to ask lots of questions. Asking questions and being curious is an essential part of being a great grad nurse. By asking questions, we are able to gain new knowledge and ensure that we are providing the highest quality patient-centred care possible.

Additionally, it is important to take all the opportunities that come your way. As a grad it is important to be brave and challenge ourselves.

Have fun, smile and enjoy your work!  Be curious and open to learning. Each shift is different. Make an effort to make friends with your fellow nursing colleagues. Ask for an offer to help those around you. Embrace all the ups and downs that nursing has to offer.
