Cancer Nurses Day held on 14 August this year, recognises the 7,700 cancer nurses nationwide and their outstanding contributions in improving patient outcomes in Australia. The 2025 Cancer Nurses Day theme is Strong, Skilled and Specialised

With advancements in treatments and technologies, alongside shifting healthcare landscapes and workforce dynamics, cancer nurses play a pivotal role in the field of cancer care.

Reaching more than 300 McGrath Cancer Care Nurses was a major milestone for the McGrath Foundation, said its Chief Nurse Kerry Patford.

“This is so much more than a number. It’s 300+ dedicated cancer care nurses providing vital clinical, emotional, and psychosocial support to people navigating the upheaval of a cancer diagnosis.

“As we mark Cancer Nurses Day, I want to thank every cancer care nurse across the country for your skill, dedication, and compassion.  You help take the chaos out of a cancer diagnosis during one of the most frightening times in people’s lives.”

In January, the McGrath Foundation announced a pivotal expansion extending its specialist nursing care beyond breast cancer, to support people experiencing any type of cancer. Since then, its nursing workforce has continued to grow to reach more people at the point of need.

“For two decades, the McGrath Foundation has offered free, expert nursing care to people with breast cancer, regardless of where they live. Expanding to all cancers was the natural next step and one that’s been embraced by the public, reiterating just how much need there is.

“Behind each statistic is a person and their family facing uncertainty and complex decisions. Without a specialist nurse, that journey is far more challenging,” said Ms Patford.

McGrath Cancer Care Nurses translate complex medical information, advocate for patients, anticipate challenges ahead, and offer compassionate care when needed most.
