The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has expressed its deep shock and sorrow at the fatal shooting of intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, during an incident involving ICE agents in Minneapolis.
The ANMF stands with our colleagues across borders in condemning the shooting of Mr Pretti and has called for accountability, transparency and justice in ensuring that his tragic death is properly and independently investigated by US authorities.
Nurses around the world dedicate their lives to caring for others in their communities.
The violent death of a registered nurse is an intolerable breach of the fundamental respect and dignity owed to health professionals who serve the community each and every day.
An attack on one nurse is an attack on the global nursing community.
It’s why the ANMF, on behalf of its members across Australia, denounces this abhorrent act of lethal force which took Mr Pretti’s life.
His death is deeply disturbing to us all.
As the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has repeatedly emphasised, no nurse should ever fear for their life because of their profession, their identity, or the circumstances in which they live and work.
We must ensure that no nurse’s life is ever again cut short in such violent circumstances in the future.

The shooting of Alex Pretti by Trump’s ICE storm troopers was a crime against humanity.
And we must stand in solidarity with members of the international nursing profession who provide a very essential service to humanity.
This should be a warning to the world regarding the upsurge in the far right world wide. Many Americans view Trump’s brutal policies as growing fascism. We should not forget that the far, right does not tolerate differences in society and promote hatred & racism agaist people who are not white & refugees shich leads to unnecessary division in sciety. They also hate unionists & progressive people who work for peace, human rights, social justice, international law & effective strategies to combat environmental pollution which is causing climate change & huge environmental health problems.
Progressive people around the world need to support each other to defeat the far right which is having a very negative impact.
Progressive Australians should be demanding that our leaders make Australia an independent, free & non-aligned nation that does not get involved with the wars & other crimes against international law that are committed with impunity by the big powers & their client states.
I totally support the ANMF’s condemnation of the brutal killing of nurse Alex Pretti, in the US. I sincerely hope that the organization has also condemned the deliberate and targeted killing of more than 1,700 health care workers in Gaza over a little more than two years, not to mention the destruction of most of Gaza’s hospitals and medical clinics.
It was brutal. He was protecting another human being and lost his life as a result. I am happy to sign any petition, protest peacefully and take this to Government to remove ourselves from this dictator and his fascist regime. Alongside this, the same for any party in our own country who support the tyranny and brutalisation of people based on colour, religion, and sexuality.
