I detest late/early shifts, I feel they are dangerous, everyone I speak to says they sleep poorly between them, which as you can imagine would increase medication errors, among other risks to patients and staff alike. We do them under the guise of continuity of care, however, when patients then start to show concern for you and your well-being, as well as concern that you are OK to continue nursing them (lets face it when your fatigued you yawn, you just cant help it, but it really does not show professionalism, or give confidence to your patients dose it?) is it really helping our patients? Do out patients feel safe with us nursing them when we ourselves are tired? Personally I feel it is lazy rostering on the part of those who are tasked with developing the fortnightly roster, especially as they work 8am to 4:30 pm in an office, so really have no handle on what its like for those of us who are working these shifts with the current work load. (OK rant over……… for now)
