Liam Caswell’s realisation to become a career coach for nurses came after experiencing a lack of guidance throughout his career.

“We have 450,000 nurses in Australia, and there’s no one kind of stepping you through how to get to the next level in your career, or what action you should be taking to get a promotion, or even just finding your niche,” Liam says.

His business, High-Performance Nursing, offers a response to this dilemma, providing advice and coaching tailored explicitly for the needs of nursing professionals.

As a nurse with more than 10 years of experience in the UK and Australia across multiple areas of practice, Mr Caswell, who also has qualifications in health management, said the idea came to him after he realised he was being asked for career advice in his own workplaces.

“They were coming to me and saying, ‘Hey Liam, I want to work toward this promotion, and how do I do it?’ and I was helping them to achieve that,” Liam says.

“I love it, and I’ve found my passion in helping people thrive within their career.”

While the business is still in its infancy, there is a specific focus that separates Liam’s nurse career coaching from other, more generalised career counselling and coaching services.

Liam offers both CV and job application coaching for clients both within and seeking to enter the nursing workforce while also coaching those seeking promotions in their current workplaces, drawing on his experiences consulting on internal workplace recruitment.

“It’s not a career where we give, give, give to the workplace, and we get very little in return; it’s about being strategic in our approach to our career so that we thrive both personally and professionally,” Liam explains.

“My vision is really about helping people realise their potential… I think it will make it a more attractive profession if we knew that we’re actually investing in people.”
