A series of two short training modules offering practical knowledge and guidance aimed at reducing the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in your facility. These modules have been developed specifically for nurses, by nurses and are free of charge.
Introduction to VTE prevention
Time to complete: 20 minutes
Areas covered include:
- The incidence of VTE and the adequacy of VTE preventative measures currently employed in Australian hospitals
- Pathophysiology and causative factors of VTE
- The signs, symptoms and complications of VTE
- Key steps in VTE risk assessment and prevention, and the importance of utilising a multidisciplinary approach
- Transitioning patients from hospital to ongoing care

Time to complete: 25–30 minute
Areas covered include:
- The role of the nurse in VTE prevention
- Conducting a VTE risk assessment, and how to assess VTE risk factors
- Developing and delivering a VTE prevention plan for an at-risk patient
- An overview of VTE prophylaxis methods and instructions on their use
- Patient monitoring and the transition from hospital to ongoing care
- Educating the patient about their VTE risk and prevention
